How
do we do VoIP?
When you use Unitec VoIP, your call connects first
via the internet to our switching facility in
Falls Church, Virginia, U.S.A. From there,
you’re switched to your destination. You pay
only 4¢ a minute for the first leg of the call
to the U.S.A. and you pay our low low U.S. rates
for the next leg. For example, if you were
calling the U.K. from Kenya and paying the
regular rate, you would pay ... well, you would
pay a lot. If you were using Unitec’s callback
service, you’d pay only 50¢ a minute. But
with the Unitec internet service, you’d pay 4¢
a minute for the connection to Virginia and 6¢
a minute for the U.S./U.K. link. Your total cost
would be 10¢ a minute!
How can
you use VoIP?
Do you operate a hotel? Make the Unitec
international service available to your guests.
Surprise everyone with the economical rates and
still derive income from calls.
Do you manage an office? Your entire staff can
rely on the Unitec connection for international
calls.
Do you run an internet café? Have the
Unitec telephone there and ready to use.
Remember, Unitec internet telephone service
is phone-to-phone. No cumbersome computer
keyboarding, no screens, no fuss.
What do
you need for VoIP?
A full-fledged VOIP phone-to-phone service is
astonishingly simple and easy to install. Here’s
what you’ll need:
- A high-speed internet connection. This can
be a cable modem, or a super high-speed
services such as ISDN, DSL or a T-1 link. The
link you choose will depend upon the amount of
telephone traffic you intend to use. A typical
DSL link, for instance, is enough for eight
simultaneous phone calls!
- A VOIP box - about the size of a telephone
modem. For most users, we recommend and
support the Mediatrix hardware.
- Telephones and an ordinary phone service.
That’s right - your telephones just plug
into the Mediatrix box. And your ordinary
phone lines allow remote users to call in from
outside.
- An account with Unitec. Your account can be
configured so Unitec recognizes your calls
automatically, or you can require your users
to enter their unique account numbers, issued
by you.
What’s
it all cost?
That’s the real surprise. Let’s take a typical
four-phone system. A Mediatrix box costs about
$750 plus shipping. Your (say) four phone lines
might cost $50 a month. Your cable internet may be
about $40 a month, or a fast ISDN, DSL, or T-1
line will cost between $50 and $500 a month,
depending on carrying capacity.
Unitec supports multiple VOIP
hardware devices hardware devices including
Mediatrix, Cisco and Nuera. We discuss only
Mediatrix VOIP hardware in this document for ease
of explanation.
There are two types of Mediatrix units, FXS and
FXO. The FXS takes standard analog telephones
plugged directly into it. The FXO is designed for
a POTS (plain old telephone service) line to the
local phone company or a corporate PBX.
Implementing FXS Units
-
Small Corporate Offices without a PBX.
Assuming your office has a dedicated Internet
connection, the FXS units are plugged directly
into your ethernet LAN hub or router. Then,
regular telephones are plugged into the
Mediatrix unit. When a caller picks up the
handset, the call is immediately processed
over the internet. The user hears a dial tone
or is prompted "please enter the number
you wish to dial." The FXS delivers the
ANI (originating number) of the phone, which
we program into the switch. As a result, the
caller is not prompted for the account code.
-
Internet Cafe's and Phone Shops. This
scenario is similar to the small business
office described above. However, phone service
can be sold to anyone who needs to make a long
distance phone call. The major difference is
that each customer must be charged separately
for his or her phone time.
In the event that a call shop is accustomed
to billing for exact charges, the owner of the
Call Shop or Internet café can view the call
records on the Unitec web site and issue exact
change. In this scenario, unique account codes
are not necessary for each caller.
Alternatively, the operator of the Internet
cafe or call shop may sell the customer a
prepaid phone card (or simply write the
account number on a slip of paper). The
Internet Cafe can sell phone cards in various
denominations, i.e. $1.00, $5.00, $20.00 etc
and in any currency. The customer picks up the
handset and enters the account number when
prompted. After the customer enters a valid
account code, he is prompted to dial his
destination. In this scenario, there is no
accounting to be done or change to be issued
at the cash register. If the customer does not
finish the card, the value is retained in the
card until the next time it is used. Under
this scenario, the phone number of the calling
unit is not entered into our switch and the
caller will be prompted for his or her account
code.
-
Prepaid Phone Cards. One of the most
exciting business opportunities made available
through the Unitec VOIP system is the ability
to quickly establish a prepaid phone card
business. The FXO unit can be used to set up a
phone card network. The entrepreneur must
acquire phone lines from the local phone
company. The lines should come with phone
numbers or toll free numbers. The numbers
should roll from one trunk to the next when
one trunk is busy.
The entrepreneur then sells phone cards in
any denomination and in any currency. The
customers make a local phone call or toll free
phone call to that number. The call hits the
Mediatrix unit, is passed to our switch and
the caller is prompted for his or her account
code.
The entrepreneur can sell access to phone
service without physically opening up a call
shop or Internet café and can distribute
cards widely around any city or country. The
entrepreneur is able to avoid investing in
expensive switching equipment because Unitec
provides a world-class prepaid calling card
platform. VoIP system replaces traditional
International Callback services.
Prepaid Cards. One of the most exciting business opportunities made
available through the Unitec system is the ability to quickly establish a prepaid
calling card business. The entrepreneur
must acquire lines from the local company.
